Welcome to the first ever Simple Step for Life from Simple Steps.
At the end of 2016, I wrote:
As 2016 draws to a close, let us not dwell on what has come to pass; instead, be thankful:
for the fact that we live in an open, tolerant society; for the lovely people that we know; for our homes and our health.
Let us be grateful for living in a country with free, universal healthcare and free education; a country in which everyone is equal before law; regardless of their colour, gender, beliefs, sexuality and background.
Some people are not so lucky. Some people have no home and no family to go to. Some people had all that we have; until war took away their city, their country, their homes and their loved ones. The lucky ones are refugees now. Think of them.
2016 feels like a year in which everything changed. Let’s make it a catalyst for good.
In 2017, stand up for what is right; meet prejudice with tolerance; when faced with discrimination, share the value of equality; dispel hate with compassion.
Let next year be the year that we all do more good, show more love and care more.
To make this world a better place for everyone.
Simple Steps is a response to this. To bring some good into the world. To share some positivity. To encourage others to make simple changes to help the environment, to improve our mental and physical health, to have a positive influence on society, to be kinder to ourselves and others.
Simple Steps is not about making people feel guilty. These Simple Steps come from a place of goodwill. They are about making small changes to benefit everyone. The world that we live in is a busy one. We are all spinning lots of plates and many of us feel like we have no energy left to fight the battles that need fighting.
These Simple Steps are here to help people do something rather than nothing. To make positive changes to our own lives and the lives of people around us.
Each week, we will be publishing a Simple Step. The Simple Steps will vary in length and theme. Some of them are super easy to implement; others will require a little more effort and commitment on your part. Some of the Simple Steps will make total sense to you; others may not. But, stick with us. By adopting these Simple Steps, you will hopefully be able to make a big difference to your mental and physical health, to your diet, to your ecological footprint and to society as a whole.
The Simple Steps come in a number of categories:
- Environment – from reducing the amount of waste you produce to using less plastic
- Food – tips to eat less sugar, to eat more veg and consume less meat
- Kindness – both to yourself and to others
There will be recipes, inspiring ideas, things to make at home, new activities to try and thought-provoking articles to read.
We hope that you enjoy these Simple Steps and that they help you to make a positive difference to your life.
